The VGA cable fixes the problem. I have run a separate audio cable, and that works too. Fortunately, my TV has these additional inputs. I contacted Dell, and they have set up replacing the motherboard. I think I will cancel that and stick with the VGA cable, since it is working. TV reports that it is in 1080p mode at 60 Hz every time I boot up, which is its best mode. (No over-scan, no flipping to 59p refresh rate.) I wonder if lower-quality HDMI cables are subject to EMI issues, especially if the contacts aren't great. I bought the VGA cable used at a local shop, and I had to straighten one of the pins out, so I don't think it's a higher-class cable. Maybe just a more robust design. Somebody told me there will be less color depth with the VGA, but I don't see it. Anyway - thanks for your help.
