Hi. I'm new to this forum. I'm not a native English speaker, so please pardon my English.
I have a desktop PC(i3 3225 + H77) with Intel 6205 wireless lan card(for desktop) installed. Also have Netgear PTV3000 WiDi receiver(firmware 2.2.6 beta).
I'm trying to connect 6205 with PTV3000 over 5GHz network but not quite sure how I can do it.
Have been searching google for days, including this forum...
During the search, I learned some important things like.....only when the wlan card is connected to a 5GHz AP, then could I connect to PTV3000 over 5GHz......only AP's are allowed to simultaneously connect to 2.4GHz devices and 5GHz devices and wlan cards are not allowed to do this by the WiFi regulations or something like that..
So....6205 wlan card can connect over either 2.4GHz network or 5GHz network, not both at the same time......at least as a wlan card..
That being said, I tried setting 'wireless mode' to '802.11a' only in the Advanced tab of wlan card property(Device Manager...Windows 7).....since I also learned that 802.11a works in the 5GHz network only.
I think I was successful in turning the wlan card into 5GHz mode, because I could no longer find the 2.4GHz AP's around, which I could find with the 'wireless mode' set to '802.11a/b/g' mode, when I tried to connect to wireless network.
After that, WiDi connection was made without any problem and the connection speed was reported to be 130Mbps (the highest I've seen...I'm not sure if it's relevant to the topic or not) Until then, I thought I was successful in WiDi connection over 5GHz...
However, when I tried searching for available AP's with my iphone 4s(2.4GHz WiFi only..), I could find one with an SSID "DIRECT-6Q-XXX..", which is WiDi AP(or whatever it is to be called) based on 6205 wlan card. That means 6205 wlan card was working in the 2.4GHz range too, despite the '802.11a' only setting, I guess.
My guess is that.....when working in WiDi mode(based on WiFi Direct?), 6205 wlan card works both in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz range, though it was set to work in the 5GHz range only(at least as a wlan card)...since it's now an AP..??
At the moment, my understanding is that with the wireless mode set to 802.11a only(5GHz only), 6205 wlan card works in the 5GHz range only(at least as a wlan card), but in WiDi mode it starts to work both in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz mode, and one can't force it to work in the 5GHz mode only....(I know of no way to force PTV3000 to work in the 5GHz range only either..)
I don't have any 5GHz AP so I can't try connecting the 6205 wlan card to the Internet over 5GHz network, to see if it would set 6205 to 5GHz only mode. But I think setting the 6205 card to 802.11a only mode does the same thing. Also...my desktop is connected to the Internet via wired connection, so 6205 wlan card is not required to work both as a wlan card and a WiDi AP.
What do you think I should try next? Could it be that I'm already successful in 5GHz WiDi connection? Or......could it be that 2.4GHz/5GHz band selection in the WiDi connection is only automatically made after a negotiation between the two devices, and can't be manually set?
